Gran Canaria
Activity details

This excursion begins when we leave behind the tourist centers of the south of Gran Canaria and head northeast towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (capital of the province with the same name: "Las Palmas"). We will see some of the city and when we leave it we will enjoy magnificent views of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and a panoramic view of the city. We continue to the town of Arucas, the banana capital of Gran Canaria.

After arriving in Arucas, we visited two of its most important attractions: the impressive neo-Gothic church of San Juan Bautista, which, although a 20th century monument, is reminiscent of a medieval church.

Our route continues to Teror, the religious capital and destination of the island's pilgrimages. On arrival, you can see the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino and discover its squares and historic corners, as well as stroll through its romantic streets with their post-colonial architecture and contemplate its beautiful balconies carved in Canary Island pine.

During the route, we break for lunch. Although lunch is not included in the price, you can choose to stock up on your own, or take advantage of a varied and typical menu of the day that includes drinks (water and wine or soft drinks). We continue our ascent and the centre of the island offers contrasting landscapes: deep ravines, many of which are populated by locals who live inside these mountains, in cave houses carved out of these rocks or to this day in natural caves.

As we climb, you will notice that the island becomes greener, which surprises the visitor who does not expect such an extraordinary diversity of landscapes. The peak envelops us with its forests of pine and chestnut trees along the roadside. You will begin to understand why this island is known as the "Miniature Continent". Not only the landscape but also the climate may surprise you, as the north is much cooler and wetter than the south where you are staying.

The heart of the island surprises us with its impressive landscapes; we leave behind the Parador de la Cruz de Tejeda at no less than 1,450 metres above sea level, to continue our journey until we stop at the Becerra viewpoint (1,550 metres above sea level) from where we can see the Roque Nublo, the emblematic natural monument of Gran Canaria, together with two other magnificent natural monoliths (pillars) "el Peñón de Bentayga" and the "Predicador". Don't forget your camera; if the weather is good you can see Tenerife clearly and with it the highest peak in Spain, the Teide, at 3,718 metres.

After reaching the summit, we start descending through the centre of Gran Canaria towards the south, between Canary Island pine forests and dams that store the water partially brought by the trade winds. In the village of Ayacata you can see the almond trees (in blossom in winter) and nature offers us rocks of a thousand shapes, which our guides will help you to discover. We continue descending and the landscape becomes drier but nevertheless impressive, which is why Unamuno described it as a "petrified tempest".

In the village of "Tunte" in the district of San Bartolomé we enter a large crater of about 10 km in diameter and stop to take pictures and have a coffee. Suddenly you realise that you are in a huge hole and you feel very small in front of the impressive mountains around you. A camera is a must, because of the wonderful views over the villages of Temisas and Santa Lucia.

The vegetation has been changing and suddenly you could be in a far corner of Arizona or Nevada; the plants are different and the vegetation belongs to the succulent family (cactus, aloes, agaves and many more) which is much admired by our visitors. It is a flora perfectly adapted to the scarce rainfall of the region. Fataga, the valley of the thousand palm trees, refuge of artists.
